Central Texas is an amazing mission field for youth outreach. A recent Forbes report listed Austin, Texas as the second fastest growing city for young people (age 5-14) - a whopping 49.3% increase between 2000 and 2013. Children age 5-14 comprise nearly 14 percent of the total population of Austin. Austin is also one of the fastest growing cities in the nation in raw numbers, gaining nearly 21,000 new residents in 2013. In terms of percent increase, San Marcos (8%), Cedar Park (5.6%) and Georgetown (4.5%) were in the top 15 fastest growing cities in America over 50,000 people between July 2012-July 2013, according to the US Census Bureau. San Antonio also ranks as one of America’s fastest growing cities, based on another assessment by Forbes. In short, the core of Central Texas is rapidly growing, providing increasing opportunities for our Pathfinder Clubs to serve our communities, make their presence known, and draw people toward Christ.
We are now in October, the Central Texas Pathfinder Month of Service. So what are some of the area Pathfinder clubs doing?
The Fiery Horses from Cedar Park, are planning an outreach to the homeless in the area, collecting materials, preparing and delivering care packages for those without a home. They are also preparing for their Fall Festival, which not only provides a wonderful opportunity to engage with the local community, but also raises money for their annual December outreach to the Dell Children’s Hospital.
The SAIL club from Austin South, took part in September in the 20th Lake Travis Underwater Cleanup, joining hundreds of other people from around the area in a morning of cleaning up the areas around the lake. According to the SAILs, this is a community project they have participated in since the founding of their local Pathfinder club. The SAIL club is now preparing for Halloween can collecting for the local food bank, the third year they will join with the local neighborhoods in helping to address food scarcity in the Austin area.
So what are your clubs doing this month to meet the needs of your community? Lets stay strong and active, and be A Servant of God and a Friend to Man.
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” - 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
